Marrakech is a city that stimulates all your senses. From the moment you arrive, you are immersed in a world of narrow alleyways, fragrant spices, colourful markets, and impressive palaces. The city is often called the “Red City” because of its many red-coloured buildings and ancient walls that glow beautifully in the sunlight.
Whether you enjoy culture, good food, shopping, or relaxation, Marrakech has something for everyone. In this blog, you will discover the city’s most beautiful sights, enjoyable activities, and useful tips for your visit to this extraordinary destination.
The Medina and the Famous Jemaa-El-Fnaa Square
The historic heart of Marrakech is undoubtedly the medina. This ancient district is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and feels like a maze of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and lively souks.
In the souks, you can find almost everything imaginable: handmade carpets, leather bags, spices, jewellery, lamps, and traditional clothing. Bargaining is part of the culture and an essential part of the experience. Take your time to wander around, because the hidden alleyways often reveal the most charming shops and local workshops.
A useful tip: download an offline map on your phone before exploring. The medina is beautiful, but getting lost happens far more quickly than you might expect.
The famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square is the beating heart of the city. During the day, you will find juice stalls, market traders, and street performers, while in the evening the square transforms into a lively open-air dining area filled with food stalls, music, and entertainment.
Jemaa el-Fnaa
At the centre of the medina lies the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. During the day, you will find fresh orange juice stalls, snake charmers, and street performers entertaining the crowds. As soon as the sun sets, the square transforms into a huge open-air restaurant.
The aroma of grilled meat, tagines, and fresh herbs fills the air, while musicians and storytellers create a lively atmosphere. Be sure to try a traditional tagine or a bowl of harira soup from one of the food stalls. The square is chaotic, vibrant, and at the same time absolutely fascinating.

Cultural Heritage
A must-visit in Marrakech is the stunning Ben Youssef Madrasa, a former Quranic school known for its intricate mosaics and finely carved woodwork. It is one of the most impressive examples of traditional Islamic architecture in the city.
For those who want to dive deeper into the city’s history, a visit to the beautiful Bahia Palace is highly recommended. Its elegant courtyards, decorative tiles, and grand rooms offer a glimpse into Marrakech’s royal past.
It is best to plan your cultural visits early in the morning, when it is quieter and the temperatures are more pleasant.
A useful tip: consider booking a local guide to accompany you. They can bring the city’s stories to life and help you understand the rich layers of history hidden within its walls.
Escape the Crowds at Jardin Majorelle
After all the hustle and bustle of the medina, a visit to Jardin Majorelle feels like a true oasis of calm. This famous botanical garden was designed by the French artist Jacques Majorelle and later restored by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. Its vivid blue buildings, exotic plants, and gently flowing fountains make it an especially photogenic place.
Next to the garden, you can also visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, where you can learn more about the iconic designer and his deep connection to Marrakech.
Tip: make sure to book your tickets at least a week in advance, as entry is limited.
Stay in a Traditional Riad
A trip to Marrakech is not complete without staying in a traditional riad. These atmospheric Moroccan houses are built around a central courtyard or patio. Many riads feature beautiful mosaics, peaceful inner courtyards, and rooftop terraces with views over the city.
