Itinerary

Day 1 – Flight Amsterdam to Marrakech Today your journey to colourful Morocco begins. Upon arrival in Marrakech, you will be transferred to your hotel or riad in the medina. Depending on your arrival time, you may already get your first taste of the city’s vibrant atmosphere at the famous Djemaa el-Fnaa square. You will find barbecue restaurants, women that will make a beautiful henna tattoo on your hands, boxing games and serveral other games. Overnight stay in a traditional riad with a swimming pool. Day 2 – Marrakech: city visit or optional zipline Today is dedicated to discovering Marrakech. Wander through narrow streets, colourful souks, and past palaces and mosques. Optionally with a local guide who will lead you through this extraordinary city. For those seeking more adventure, there is an optional zipline activity just outside the city, offering stunning views of the Atlas Mountains. Overnight stay in a traditional riad with a swimming pool. Day 3 – Marrakech – Tighza (High Atlas) Meeting with our guide. After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and head south, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass as we wind our way into the peaks of the Atlas Mountains. We pass the crumbling kasbah (important fortress) of Telouat, where we stop for lunch at a local restaurant. After arrival and check-in, we enjoy a gentle circular walk around Tighza (2.8 km total distance, 90 m ascent and descent). We will take an easy pace along winding paths high above the valley. Overnight stay in a simple gîte. Day 4 – Tighza – Anmiter hike – Aït Ben Haddou Today we will meet Morocco's traditional villages, people and traditions. Everything is a new: the colours, the people, language, streets and houses. During our hike from Tighza to Anmiter, we will see an old irrigation system. If possible, we will have a drink in a traditional cafe. The walk covers 4.5 km, with 23 m ascent and 170 m descent. At the end of the route, we enjoy lunch in a local home in the village of Tizgui. We continue by bus through the Ounila Valley, where barren slopes contrast with the lush valley floor. Today’s destination is Aït Ben Haddou, an ancient ksar (fortified village) listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and used as a filming location for many movies and series. Overnight stay in Riad Maktoub. Day 5 – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Tamnougalt This morning we start cycling from Aït Ben Haddou towards the Draa Valley and the town of Ouarzazate. Known as the “gateway to the desert”, Ouarzazate lies between the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. It is home to the Atlas Film Studios, one of the largest film studios in the world, where scenes from films such as The Mummy, Gladiator, and Babel were shot. After visiting the studios, we will have lunch in Ouarzazate. We then travel by bus through landscapes of palm groves, kasbahs, and traditional ksours towards Tamnougalt, once the capital of this remote desert region. Cycling distance: 21 km. Helmet is mandatory. Overnight stay in Kasbah Itrane. Day 6 – Tamnougalt – Zagora – Erg Chigaga Via the palm oases around Zagora, we gradually head deeper into the Sahara. Eventually we reach the impressive dunes of Erg Chigaga. A camel ride at sunset completes this desert day, followed by an overnight stay in a tented camp under the stars. Overnight stay in a simple desert camp. Day 7 – Erg Chigaga – Foum Zguid – Taliouine After sunrise in the desert, we continue by 4x4 through rugged desert landscapes towards Foum Zguid. The scenery gradually changes into mountains and saffron fields around Taliouine, known as the heart of Morocco’s saffron production. We will take a walk through the saffron fields around the village, especially beautiful during the autumn season. Overnight stay in a traditional, simple auberge. Day 8 – Taliouine – Marrakech Today we drive back to the Red City. In the afternoon, there is time for last shopping in the souks or to relax on a terrace at the lively Djemaa el-Fnaa square. Overnight stay in a traditional riad with a swimming pool. Day 9 – Flight Marrakech to Amsterdam After breakfast, you will be transferred to Marrakech airport for your return flight to Amsterdam. The end of a varied journey filled with culture, nature, adventure, and desert experiences in Morocco.
