This trip is suitable for moderately fit travelers who love adventure! The level of hikes varies between moderate and challenging. We will camp in nature (no facilities) for 3 nights and will stay in simple guesthouses at two locations. We will stay in Marrakech for the remaining 2 nights.
This trip is fully organized by a team consisting of: an English-speaking guide, a driver, mules for luggage, and a cook. Full camping equipment is provided, but bring your own sleeping bag!
Itinerary
Day 1 - Flight Amsterdam-Marrakech Arrival in Marrakech late afternoon. Our team will be waiting at the airport to take you directly to the hotel. You can relax for the rest of the day, explore the bustling city streets, or enjoy your first Moroccan mint tea. You will stay in a traditional Riad in the city center. Day 2 - Marrakech - Ouzoud Waterfalls - Arous Valley Today we drive from Marrakech towards the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, we will visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls, where you can admire the 110-meter-high falls and wild Barbary macaques in the trees. After a lunch break, the drive continues past the Happy Valley to the rugged Arous Valley. You will spend the evening and overnight stay in a comfortable, traditional mountain guesthouse. Altitude: ~1,900 m–2,000 m Driving time: 5–6 hours Accommodation: Simple Guesthouse Day 3 Arous - Tarkeddit Plateau Today we begin our trek. You will hike up a winding mountain path, past grazing goats and sheep. At the Tizi Oughri Pass (3,400 meters), you will have a beautiful view of the gigantic M'Goun mountain range. After taking photos, we walk down via the Tarkeddit Plateau, a plain where local nomad families live with their animals in the summer. Altitude: Start at 1,900 m / Camp at 2,900–2,950 m (Pass: 3,350–3,400 m) Hiking time: 5–6 hours Distance: 10–12 km Altitude: +1,500 m / -450 m Accommodation: Camping Day 4 - Takeddit - M'Goun Mountain Peak - Oulilimt This is the most difficult but exciting day of the trip. We start hiking early, in the dark with headlamps. We hike along a rocky path to the mountain ridge. Hiking here feels like walking on the roof of North Africa! From the 4,071-meter-high summit, you can see the entire Atlas mountain range and the distant Sahara. After this, you walk along a pleasant, rocky path to a quiet campsite on the Oulilimt River. Altitude: Start at 2,900 m / Summit at 4,071 m / Camp at 2,550–2,650 m Hiking time: 8–10 hours Distance: 18–22 km Altitude: +1,170 m / -1,450 m Accommodation: Camping Day 5 - Oulilimt - Aflafal Today is a relaxing 4 to 5-hour hike with no steep climbs. You follow a beautiful river through deep rocky gorges. Along the way, you will see rock structures carved by the wind that look like towers and chimneys. It is a lovely day to look for wildflowers and enjoy the leisurely pace. The day ends at the natural springs of Aflafal. Altitude: Start at 2,600 m / Camp at 2,100–2,200 m Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 10–12 km Altitude: +100 m / -500 m Accommodation: Camping Day 6 - Aflafal - Tizi n'Aït Imi - Aït Bouguemez On your final trek day, we walk along an old path that was once used by camel caravans. We climb the Tizi n'Aït Imi pass at 2,900 meters. From the top, you have an incredible view straight down onto the green fields of the Happy Valley. Afterwards, we walk into the valley for our overnight stay. Tonight is a special evening: the trek is complete, and we are celebrating! Altitude: Start at 2,100 m / Pass at 2,900 m / End at 1,900 m Hiking time: 6–7 hours Distance: 14–16 km Altitude: +800 m / -1,000 m Accommodation: Comfortable village guesthouse Day 7 - Aït Bouguemez - Imi n'Ifri - Marrakech We say goodbye to the Happy Valley and drive back to Marrakech. Along the way, we stop to explore the Imi n'Ifri Natural Bridge, a gigantic, ancient rock arch carved out by water over thousands of years. After exploring this unique natural wonder, we continue our drive back to the city and check into the hotel for the last night. Mid-range hotel in Marrakech. Driving time: 5–6 hours Accommodation: Hotel in Marrakech Day 8 - Marrakech - Amsterdam Enjoy your last breakfast in Morocco. Our driver picks us up at the hotel and takes us to Marrakech airport for the return flight to Amsterdam.
